Robot — “a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer.” 

Automaton —  ”a machine that performs a function according to a predetermined set of coded instructions, especially one capable of a range of programmed responses to different circumstances.”

I should mention these are human terms… Still, I digress…
Robot and Automaton, while they can be similar in function, are not the same thing… otherwise there wouldn’t be different words for either of them.
If we’re talking about this in a ‘serious’ manner (which I’d hold we aren’t, but still) — I think any fully functional and sentient robot would be insulted to be called an Automaton. Since Automatons are basically pre-programmed machines whose functions aren’t really calculated on the situation at hand. Most of the modern robots are built to adapt and adjust to their environment and circumstances. 
Automatons are often built to follow a strict function, never diverting from it unless programmed otherwise.

Don’t insult every type of technologically engineered creation by mistaking them for one another. You can’t just call any cybernetic being a robot nor can you call any moving dummy doll an Automaton. You can’t call any bipedal cyber being an Android or a Droid simply because they resemble a human being. There’s specifics in their make up that determine what their designation is. Contrary to popular belief there IS a science to this madness. Specific functions and predetermined programming dictate the label, and if at all. The complexity of Cybertronian biology can’t even begin to conform to Earthly labels. 
Pah-leeze! Calling robot a derogatory term. That’s like saying ‘human’ is a swear word. Even Cybertronians call robots ‘robot’. Albeit it’s likely not a term for the most intelligent of the race, but the word exists AND it’s not an insult.
