In Japan, when a guy wants to ask a girl out, they always ask the girl if she would like to have a cup of tea with him. This almost always happens on a first date, even today! So when Shinji says he’s a guy, it’s in reference to the whole thing about a guy asking someone to date them and he’s saying he’s straight and male, not gay or female.
