Actually, scientists get horseshoe crabs from the ocean/beach and bring them to a sanitized building, where they collect the blue blood from them. They’re still alive and the scientists make sure that they don’t drain too much blood. After they get the blood they need, they let the horseshoe crabs recover then return them to the ocean completely unharmed. 

The blood of horseshoe crabs are used to test out medicines and other things to benefit us.
