He was dying of cancer and he volunteered for a project by Weapon Plus (the fine makers of Wolverine’s adamantium laced skeleton) to try and replicate Wolverine’s healing factor. It was successful beyond their wildest dreams (Wade is basically unkillable, more so than even Wolverine), but it left him horribly scarred. He makes jokes and acts the way he does because it’s all he has left, it helps distract him from what he’s gone through. It’s a coping mechanism.
