At first guess I thought it meant venomous cone snails. But it’s much worse.
They’re probably talking about freshwater snails. These snails are hosts for a kind of parasitic worm. The worm gets released into the water, and can infect people, causing a disease called Schistosomiasis or snail fever, it wrecks in the intestines and liver and kills up to 10,000 people a year.
Though in lots of ancient tropical cultures they thought that the blood in the urine symptoms were normal, just penis periods.
