i always feel a little sorry for artists who post usd-only shops in art sales expecting to get business. rarely ever do i see people touch those threads, regardless of the artist’s skill level or financial troubles

Yeah, man, those people trying to get the amount of money they actually ask for in a currency they can actually use are just so full of it right? (sarcasm)

All this tells me is that you don’t have enough experience on the topic to have an opinion on the topic.

You’ve probably never had to deal with the situation where you’re struggling to pay for things, charging way less then your work and time is worth already, and having someone send you payment only to find out it was in foreign currency which equates to only half the amount you asked for after it’s converted. So you tell them this and they act like you’re the one stealing from them and try to fight about it usually ending with them canceling their commission and even demanding a refund on what they already paid…even though you’ve likely already worked on their commission. If they’re particularly dickish they then go around shit talking about you afterwards.

So yeah, shut the fuck up about things you know nothing about. It wouldn’t surprise me if you have this opinion because you ARE one those people I mentioned above who are just pissed because you don’t want to actually pay the amount you should for the things you want.

And anyone who agreed with you, hopefully you know better now why these things are what they are. Most of the time these artists aren’t saying you have to have US money but if you don’t you may need to pay more to equal the amount they actually want because your money may not be worth as much.

And if you’re just upset because they’re asking for real money and not fake money well…GTFO because people fucking need to eat and artwork is still work.

As one of those people who had a “USD only” art shop for a while,  I would like to thank the second poster for their reply.

I do not have a job. I am trying to get a job, but I currently do not have one, and as a result, I have no money. My family is quite poor right now, as well, and so I can’t really ask for money when I need it.

I had my shop set up for USD only because my mother’s birthday was coming up and I wanted to get her something. I knew it would be something small, but if I could only get $5 for a quick sketch commission, I would be able to get her SOMETHING. I wasn’t asking outrageous prices. I was asking for five bucks a commission. FIVE. DOLLARS. People pay more than that for a junk food meal from McDonalds on a regular basis.

Thankfully, one person messaged me asking why I was accepting only USD, and when I told them, they commissioned me on the spot. I was able to get them artwork they liked, and as a result, I was able to buy my mother a small pendant for her birthday, when I hadn’t been expecting to be able to get her anything at all.

So, OP. As the person above you said, you don’t always know the situation. People may be trying to simply make ends meet, or they may be someone trying to do something special for someone they love, and this is the only option they have. I’m just lucky that that sweet user decided my art and my reason was worth the 5 dollars.
