I debated on whether or not to post this but then I decided it might prove helpful and give others an idea of what to look for if they come across an animal that’s been poached. And at this point I’d like to do anything possible to help this guy’s death from being a total waste.
This buck was dumped on my road today. No injuries from being hit by a car just the missing head and the gunshot wound in the side. There was no blood anywhere around it which shows it was shot somewhere else before being dumped here.
If you ever come across anything like this please report it to your local wildlife authorities!
it’s hunting season though… what you talking about poached?
Not in my part of TN. And even it was and if you get the permit to hunt you don’t shoot it and then dump it on a road. It’s extremely irresponsible not to mention illegal.
when you hunt you’re supposed to collect the deer after you’ve killed it first of all, and on top of that it’s just basic decency to use as much of it as you can. My mom and dad killed two deer and we plan on eating all of both of them, including the tough shoulder meat. on top of that, dad makes trophies of the antlers and tails. Those deer died for more than just one purpose, and in making sure that their bodies don’t go to waste you respect them
You do know according to the natural laws of Earth that if humans don’t eat it, other animals and insects will and the corpse will just turn into soil for trees right?
Yes, all that is very true. And something that I am very glad for. But as I see it, when you take an animal’s life it’s your responsibility as a hunter to use every part of that animal. This here is a disrespectful waste. The TWRA officer that came out to see it said there were reports of at least three other deer dumped on nearby roads today. That’s at least four big, prime of their life bucks taken out of the local breeding population. Granted, deer are severely overpopulated in many parts of the US but that’s why we have permits and tags and licenses and wildlife management agencies to help regulate their numbers. It’s not free reign for Joe Blow to go blast as many away as he feels like and then leave them in the road after he’s taken the little trophy he needs to make himself feel like he’s tough shit.
When my dad grew up he lived way out in the woods and he never saw deer. At all. Because there were no enforced hunting regulations back then and the deer population was dwindling from overhunting. Now, with the exception of disease that wipes out large numbers every few years or so, there is a very large and healthy population in this state.
The buzzards have been circling all day and I’m sure the coyotes, foxes, and other critters will find him tonight and I’m glad they’ll have a meal but this is still terribly irresponsible and disrespectful and is not something that should have happened.
In some areas of the USA, it’s illegal NOT to use the carcass of a hunted animal. If you shoot it and take the antlers, but leave the rest behind, it’s called “wanton waste” and it is a crime.
There is literally no excuse for killing something, taking just one part, and leaving the rest to rot.
You don’t even have to use it all yourself! There are food banks, prisons, and private hunt clubs that accept donations of fresh deer and elk carcasses during hunting season so that people who cannot normally access fresh meat can eat it.
