the tipped minimum wage is one of the most vile things in American labor tbh
Yooo this is a feminist issue: service industry workers are overwhelmingly minorities, women, and in fact, minority women (who I am sure are already aware of this dynamic).
Holy shit that sort of minimum wage is vile and disgusting.
That is also why NOT tipping your servers 15-20% in America is considered not just cheap, but incredibly unkind. And 15-20% is the BARE MINIMUM. Tipping less is justified if the server’s, like, super incompetent and totally unapologetic about it, or incredibly, impossibly, unarguably rude or something. That should happen to you, like, maybe twice in your life, unless you’ve got shit luck. Tip your FUCKING SERVERS.
Also, it’s worth noting that your server gets taxed on a percentage extrapolated from the food & beverage sales—i.e. the government assumes you made roughly 12% of your sales in tips and taxes you accordingly, regardless of whether you made that or not.
So this means on a night when I don’t make diddly shit because 3 people stiffed me and the others tipped like crap, I’m literally paying taxes on money I didn’t make. So I get to pay the government for the privilege of serving cheap tippers, and pay my bills with a song and a prayer, I guess.
Tip your delivery drivers too please. ❤️
People forget about us sometimes.
delivery drivers make slightly more (about 4.90 and hour here in florida, although it may change from company to company) but we only usually deliver to an average of 2-3 houses per hour. Stiffing us puts us under the minimum wage, and gas is not cheap regardless. It’s almost never the drivers fault if an order is late, and (at least at dominos) we don’t see the delivery charge, so please consider this when tipping!
